Understanding MCI
MCI is the stage between normal age-related memory changes and the more serious decline of dementia. People with MCI notice changes in memory or thinking greater than expected for their age — but the changes are not severe enough to significantly interfere with daily life.
Early identification changes outcomes. With the right support and lifestyle adjustments, many individuals with MCI maintain independence for years — and some improve. Knowing is the first step.
Know the Signs
These changes can be subtle. If you notice several of the following in yourself or a loved one, a free five-minute screen can give you clarity.
Forgetting recent conversations, appointments, or the names of familiar people more frequently than usual.
Pausing mid-sentence, substituting words, or struggling to recall a term that was once automatic.
Putting objects in unusual places and being unable to retrace steps to locate them later.
More effort than before required to manage finances, follow multi-step recipes, or organise tasks.
Increased anxiety, depression, or irritability — particularly in mentally demanding situations.
Confusion navigating familiar routes, neighbourhoods, or losing track of dates and seasons.
